Why AZ recreation therapists are earning bachelor’s degrees
The Arizona Department of Health and Human Services has approved a program that would allow recreation therapists to earn a bachelor’s degree from the University of Arizona in the future.
The department said it approved the program on Thursday.
The department will not offer a nursing or pharmacy degree.
The program is aimed at increasing the number of recreation therapists in the state and providing a better pipeline to medical and other training programs.
It’s part of a broader effort to boost the state’s economy, including through an overhaul of Medicaid and an increase in Medicaid enrollment.
The waiver is the latest effort to expand recreation-related jobs and training in Arizona, a state that has seen the growth of the tourism industry over the past decade.
The Legislature in 2015 passed a law that allows for the state to offer recreational jobs to anyone, but there have been no new recreational-related positions.
